The Ordinary of the Mass

The Epistle

The priest reads the Epistle from the Mass of the day.

The priest reads or chants the Epistle for the day:

Lesson from the Epistle of the blessed Apostle Paul to the Romans: O the depth of the riches of the wisdom and of the knowledge of God! How incomprehensible are His judgments, and how unsearchable His ways! For “Why hath known the mind of the Lord? Or who hath been His counsellor? Or who hath first given to Him, and recompense shall be made him?” For of Him, and by Him, and in Him, are all things: to Him be glory forever. Amen.

R. Thanks be to God.

Amen.

R. Deo gratias.

The Gradual

Blessed art Thou, O Lord, that beholdest the depths and sittest upon the Cherubim. V. Blessed art Thou, O Lord, in the firmament of heaven, and worthy of praise forever.
Alleluia, alleluia. V. Blessed art Thou, O Lord the God of our fathers, and worthy to be praised forever. Alleluia.

Benedictus es, Domine, qui intueris abyssos, et sedes uper Cherubim. V. Benedictus es. Domine, in firmamento caeli, et laudabilis in saecula.

Alleluia, alleluia. V. Benedictus es, Domine, Deus patrum nostrorum, et laudibilis saecula. Alleluia.

The Holy Gospel

The priest, returning to the middle of the altar, bows down, joins his hands, and says

P: Cleanse my heart and my lips, O almighty God, Who didst cleanse with a burning coal the lips of the prophet Isaias; and vouchsafe in Thy loving kindness so to purify me that I may be enabled worthily to announce Thy holy Gospel. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Vouchsafe, O Lord, to bless me. The Lord be in my heart and on my lips, that I may worthily and becomingly announce His Gospel. Amen.

P: Munda cor meum, ac labia mea, omnipotens Deus, qui labia Isaiae prophetae calculo mundasti ignito: ita me tua grata miseratione dignare mundare, ut sanctum Evangelium tuum digne valeam nuntiare. Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.
Jube Domine benedicere. Dominus sit in corde meo, et in labiis meis; ut digne et competenter annuntiem Evangelium suum. Amen.

The priest and server trace a cross on their forehead, lips, and heart before the reading of the Gospel.

The priest goes to the Gospel side of the altar and reads the Gospel for the Mass he is celebrating.

P: The Lord be with you.
R: And with thy spirit.
P: + The following is taken from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.
R: Glory be to Thee, O Lord.

P. At that time, Jesus said to His disciples: “All power is given to Me in heaven and on earth. Going therefore, teach ye all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and behold, I am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world.”

At the end of the Gospel, the server says

R: Praise be to Thee, O Christ.

P: May our sins be blotted out by the words of the Gospel.
