Catholics rely greatly on prayer, as we acknowledge when we seek peace and refuge in conversation with God, or ask friends to offer prayers for us. What comfort is obtained in the knowledge that someone dear is offering prayers to the Father on our behalf!

It is this same motivation which prompts devout souls to burn candles in the church, or even before holy images in their own homes. Prayer, practiced as a virtue, is a continual uplifting of the heart to and union with God. While we carry on with our daily duties, the candle we have lit burns faithfully as a constant prayer to God, reminding Him of our love and our petitions. As long as the flame is glowing — be it for eight hours or for eight days — for that length of time are the angels presenting at the Throne of Mercy the prayers of the entire Church for our intention. Hence, the pious custom of lighting vigil candles is a highly commendable and most efficacious means of obtaining the choicest blessings for ourselves and our loved ones.
